The clock starts at acceptance, not submission
A file is only in the queue once it has been accepted as complete. Anything missing at the counter resets you to the back of the line, which is why an incomplete file submitted early routinely finishes behind a complete one submitted a month later.
What drives the variation
Purpose of the clearance, the applicant’s history and residency record, the volume in front of you, and whether any submitted document needs verification with its issuing body. The last one is the largest swing factor and the one most within your control.
Documents that most often need re-verification
Certificates issued abroad, translations that do not carry a certification stamp, and any document whose name spelling differs from the passport. Reconciling name spellings across every document before submission removes the most common cause of a stalled file.
What does not speed things up
Resubmitting a file already in the queue, or filing a second application in parallel. Both create duplicate records that have to be reconciled before either can proceed. If a file is genuinely stalled, the route is a status enquiry, not a new submission.
