Before anything else: the CAS
The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is issued by your university once you hold an unconditional offer and have met their deposit and document conditions. Nothing else in the visa file can be finalised before it, because the CAS reference goes on the application itself. Chasing the CAS is the single highest-value thing you can do early.
Identity documents
A current passport with adequate remaining validity and at least one blank page, plus any previous passports that show earlier UK or Schengen travel. If your name appears differently across documents — a common issue with transliterated Arabic names — bring the official document that reconciles them.
Academic documents
Degree certificates and full transcripts for the qualifications listed on your CAS, with certified translations where the originals are not in English. The translation must carry the translator’s certification, date and contact details; an uncertified translation is the most common single reason a file comes back.
English language evidence
A Secure English Language Test where your course requires one, taken at an approved centre. Some universities assess English themselves and state this on the CAS — in that case the test certificate is not submitted separately, but the CAS must say so explicitly.
Financial evidence
Evidence that you hold the required funds for tuition and living costs for the qualifying period, held for the required number of consecutive days and dated within the required window before you apply. The two errors we see most are statements that are too recent to show the full holding period, and accounts in a relative’s name without the documentation that permits it.
Health and travel
The immigration health surcharge is paid as part of the application. A tuberculosis test certificate is required from certain countries; check whether yours is on the current list before booking, as the certificate has a limited validity.
The three that come back most often
Uncertified translations, financial statements outside the valid date window, and a mismatch between the course details on the CAS and on the application form. All three are avoidable with one careful review pass — which is exactly what our visa desk does before anything is submitted.
